The first entrance to the new Tottenham Court Road station was opened in January 2015.

More than £1bn is being invested in this station as part of the major Crossrail project that will improve rail travel in central London.

SDS Matting Ltd have been heavily involved in this project from an early stage, using our experience and knowledge of entrance matting systems to develop a solution that meets the need to have entrance mats that satisfy three vital criteria:

  • Multi-directional tread pattern to reduce the risk of pedestrians slipping as they enter the station from either Tottenham Court Road or Oxford Street.
  • Heavy duty, load bearing structures to support the mats over the drained matwells.
  • Low smoke emission and fire resistant rubber tread inserts to comply with London Underground Section Twelve regulations.

Much work has gone into this package, with SDS Matting liaising closely with the design team, contractors Vinci Bam Nuttall Joint Venture, and entrance matting manufacturers EMS.

Installation was carried out by SDS Matting in two stages; first the drainage system and supporting structure, followed by the drainable EMS LU Multi-Track entrance matting.

Next time you use this station, while you admire the new artwork and iconic Paolozzi mosaics, don’t forget that there is more than meets the eye to the entrance mats under your feet!
