Nuway Tuftiguard HD – Birmingham Gateway

New Street Station in Birmingham is the busiest railway station outside London and is used by 140,000 passengers every day.

The dark, unwelcoming and overcrowded 1960s building has undergone a complete redevelopment by Network Rail and Mace to create an awe inspiring, bright, and spacious transport experience.

SDS Matting has been involved in this exciting project, successfully completing a phased installation of heavy duty Nuway Tuftiguard entrance mats manufactured by Forbo Flooring.  The large area of matting in Phase 1 comprised of faceted segments forming a curve nearly 26 metres long.  An interesting challenge on this part of the project was created by a difference in ground levels, which necessitated carefully building up a curved ramped base for the matting.

Phase 2 was completed in September 2015, during which 465 square metres of matting were installed in the incredibly short time-frame of just over three weeks!  This remarkable achievement was made possible by excellent teamwork and coordination between the staff of the main contractor, stonework contractor Grants of Shoreditch, and SDS Matting.
